Recognition for Regional Excellence in Judo Instruction and Athlete Development

High Noon Judo, operating under the nonprofit Martial Arts for Social Transformation, Equity, and Rights (MASTERs), has been recognized as the Best Judo Academy in the DMV of 2025 by Evergreen Awards. This recognition is based on the program’s consistent performance in national-level competition, its structured approach to athlete development, and its commitment to community engagement through martial arts.

High Noon Judo was selected following a competitive review process assessing technical proficiency, athlete support systems, instructional quality, and community impact across numerous martial arts academies in the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region.

Competitive Performance at the National Level

In May 2025, High Noon Judo participated in the USA Judo Senior National Championships held in Birmingham, Alabama. The team fielded 14 athletes across various divisions and reported multiple podium finishes. Participants included a range of competitors—from youth and adult hobbyists to emerging elite athletes—demonstrating the academy's reach across experience levels and age groups.

Athletes Emma Bragg, Chloe Williams, and Nakapan Phungephorn were among those who competed in multiple divisions and placed in medal rounds. The team also included player-coaches who balanced responsibilities as competitors and mentors during the event.

Instructional Leadership and Program Structure

The academy is led by Dr. Christopher Round, a fourth-degree black belt in Judo and black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dr. Round’s coaching incorporates elements from traditional martial arts pedagogy as well as competition-oriented training frameworks. He has instructed in several countries and has trained under recognized figures within the martial arts community.

High Noon Judo's coaching staff includes multiple instructors who actively participate in tournaments and contribute to program development. Their collective experience supports a training model that prioritizes technical precision and adaptability in competitive settings.

Community Focus and Nonprofit Collaboration

High Noon Judo operates in collaboration with MASTERs, a nonprofit organization that supports athlete development and promotes martial arts as a vehicle for social engagement. MASTERs facilitates access to training for young practitioners, particularly in underrepresented communities, and offers resources such as scholarships and coaching support.

Several athletes competing at the 2025 national championships were part of the MASTERs fellowship program, which provides developmental opportunities to aspiring judoka. The program's mission aligns with broader efforts to expand access to high-level martial arts instruction in the region.

Observations from Participants

Team members and coaches highlighted the logistical preparation, instructional structure, and peer support that contributed to their performance. Athletes noted the benefits of having on-site coaching and coordinated resources during competition. Feedback emphasized the balance of technical preparation and administrative organization as key components in their tournament experience.
